Hundreds of events are taking place around the UK to raise money and awareness for crises in vulnerable communities around the world.
Christian Aid Week, runs from May 14-20, and Selaine Saxby, MP for North Devon met with campaigners in Westminster and local campaigners at their ‘Big Brekkie’ fundraiser at Christ Church Barnstaple on Saturday 20th May.
The focus of this year’s Christian Aid week is supporting families in Malawi, who are paying a harsh price for the global cost of living and climate crises.
Selaine Saxby, MP for North Devon said:
“It was great to meet with Christian Aid in Westminster and hear how we can help our friends in developing countries.
“I am pleased to be supporting Christian Aid and the work they are doing internationally, and it was great once again to be with them locally in Barnstaple to support their fundraising efforts here.”
Patrick Watt, Christian Aid’s CEO said:
“Christian Aid Week is a moment in the year when people across the UK, in every parliamentary constituency, give, take action, and pray in support of Christian Aid’s work to end the injustice of poverty. In the current economic climate, the solidarity and compassion of the British public for their global neighbours is more important than ever.
Christian Aid Week 2023 focuses on rural communities in Malawi, whose efforts to break free from poverty are being frustrated by unfair prices for their crops, and the intensifying effects of climate change. Many families are having to choose which child to send to school, or which sickness to treat. Young people’s futures are being put on the line.
“However, change is possible. We are extremely grateful for the extraordinary work of our supporters and the backing of people like Selaine Saxby MP. The actions taken and gifts given this week will change lives.
“Christian Aid Week is a powerful statement that we are united in the hope that a better world is possible.”
Janet Marshall, Christian Aid coordinator in North Devon said:
“We were delighted to welcome Selaine again to our “Big Brekkie” event in Barnstaple and that she was able to attend the Christian Aid event in Westminster.
An international agreement was made at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh to create a loss and damage fund. This is undeniably a significant step, but there is still a lot more work to do and we in North Devon will continue to do what we can.
Christian Aid works in some of the world's poorest communities, where there is great need, regardless of religion, supporting people to live a full life, free from poverty. For more about Christian Aid’s work, visit www.christianaid.org.uk.”
