North Devon MP, Selaine Saxby, has virtually met with the Lord Chancellor, Robert Buckland, to confirm the future of the magistrates’ court here in Barnstaple. With the police moving from their premises, and virtual court proceedings in Exeter, concerns had been raised about the long-term future of a Barnstaple magistrates court.
Robert Buckland gave a “categorical reassurance” that the move to Exeter was short term and the magistrates court would return to Barnstaple. He advised that the court was very well used, at 71%, which is 11% above the regional average.
Selaine said of the news:
“I am delighted that our magistrates’ court has a secure future and will work with Ministers, the police and judiciary to ensure that this can proceed smoothly once we begin to move out of lockdown.”
