Funding is part of the Government’s unprecedented £750 million emergency package of support for voluntary, community and social enterprise sectors
The Calvert Trust, North Devon Sunrise CIC and the YMCA Centres South Molton are among 13 frontline charities across North Devon awarded over a quarter of a million pounds, in Government funding to ensure they can continue their vital work during the coronavirus pandemic.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden wrote to Selaine Saxby MP this week to confirm the local charities that had benefited from the £200 million Coronavirus Community Support Fund, as more recipients of the Government’s £750 million package of support for the voluntary, community and social enterprise sectors were confirmed. This includes almost £100K for the Exmoor Calvert Trust; £61K for North Devon Sunrise Community Interest Company and £24K for the YMCA Centres (South Molton).
The unprecedented package of Government support for charities will direct cash grants to tens of thousands of organisations who provide key services and support vulnerable people. This will ensure they can meet increased demand as a result of coronavirus, as well as continuing their day-to-day activities supporting those in need.
Selaine Saxby MP said:
“North Devon has many amazing charities that have worked particularly hard in the last nine months. I am delighted with this announcement and that so many of them have been recognised and supported by the Government.”
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said:
“We have relied upon our charities more than ever during the pandemic, which is why the Government’s £750 million package of support is so important.
“We are working flat out to get the money to charities across the country as quickly as possible, and to make sure help reaches those who need it most. This is just the beginning, with charities across the country set to benefit from wider government financial support schemes in the coming months.”
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has led the allocation and distribution of funding so that it is directed to where it is most needed. That includes:
- An allocation of £200 million to hospices across England;
- £200 million to the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, distributed by the National Lottery Community Fund, with a focus on supporting small and medium-sized charities;
- £160 million to government departments for charities working on the front line of the Covid response, on issues such as tackling domestic violence, supporting the nation’s mental health and protecting vulnerable children;
- £37 million to the BBC’s Big Night In appeal, matching the generosity of the public in raising funds for Children In Need, Comic Relief and the National Emergencies Trust;
- £85 million through DCMS’ Community Match Challenge, which has worked with a range of philanthropists and funders to unlock more than £160 million for good causes;
- £60 million to the Devolved Administrations to support charities in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland;
- £5 million to the Voluntary and Community Sector Emergencies Partnership to support volunteers in local areas.
It comes on top of the £150 million released from dormant accounts to help social enterprises get affordable credit to people who are financially vulnerable and support charities tackling youth unemployment.
With the wider Government financial support schemes in place, charities will continue to benefit from an unprecedented multi-billion-pound package of support.
